Allianz Football League: How Ulster counties are shaping up for 2025 season

Manager: Malachy O’Rourke (1st season) Last year: Fifth in Division One First up: Derry (H), Armagh (A), Mayo (H), Kerry (H), Galway (A), Donegal (A), Dublin (H) ‘Things can only get better’ will be the belief amongst Red Hand supporters this year after three relatively poor campaigns following a surprise All-Ireland success in 2021. Expectations are rising once again in Tyrone with the appointment of Malachy O’Rourke – another former member of the Football Review Committee – as manager and the county’s back-to-back All-Ireland under-20 triumphs. The Brian Dooher and Feargal Logan era ended dismally last summer with a first championship defeat by Roscommon in the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final. Given Errigal Ciaran’s run to the All-Ireland Club final, O’Rourke will likely be without Peter Harte, Joe Oguz, Cormac Quinn, Darragh and Ruairi Canavan for Saturday’s blockbuster opener against Derry. Instead, it will be up to the likes of Niall Morgan, Darren McCurry and the evergreen Mattie Donnelly to lead the charge. The new generation may also play their part and that includes highly-rated forward Eoin McElholm, who will remain in the white and red of Tyrone despite interest from Australian Football League [AFL] clubs. Elephants are not people, rules Colorado Supreme Court

A bid to free five elephants from a Colorado zoo has been rejected after a court ruled elephants are not people. An animal rights group argued Missy, Kimba, Lucky, LouLou and Jambo were effectively imprisoned at the zoo, and had filed to have them moved to an elephant sanctuary. It tried to bring a habeas corpus claim on behalf of the animals – a legal process which allows a person to challenge their detention in court. The Colorado Supreme Court said the matter boiled down to “whether an elephant is a person” and therefore had the same liberty rights as a human – ultimately deciding that they did not. It ruled 6-0 in favour of a previous district court decision that said the state’s habeas corpus process “only applies to persons, and not to nonhuman animals”. This was true “no matter how cognitively, psychologically, or socially sophisticated they may be,” State Supreme Court Justice Maria Berkenkotter added in her ruling. While she said the five elderly African elephants were “majestic,” the court ruled the claim could not be brought “because an elephant is not a person”. The Nonhuman Rights Project (NRP) petitioned for the elephants to be moved from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo to a “suitable elephant sanctuary” in 2023. The group argued the animals had a right to freedom because they were emotionally complex and intelligent animals. It claimed the elephants showed signs of “trauma, brain damage, and chronic stress” and that they were effectively “imprisoned” at the zoo. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo rejected the claim, arguing the elephants had received remarkable care, and was supported by a district court. After the Supreme Court ruling, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo called NRP’s lawsuit “frivolous” and said it had “wasted” time and money on the case. It accused the group of “abusing court systems to fundraise” and claimed its goal was “to manipulate people into donating to their cause by incessantly publicising sensational court cases with relentless calls for supporters to donate”. NRP said the decision “perpetuate[d] a clear injustice, stating that unless an individual is human they have no right to liberty”. “As with other social justice movements, early losses are expected as we challenge an entrenched status quo that has allowed Missy, Kimba, Lucky, LouLou, and Jambo to be relegated to a lifetime of mental and physical suffering,” the group said in a statement. An earlier bid by NRP to free an elephant named Happy from New York’s Bronx Zoo was rejected after the court judged she was not legally a person. Source link

Storm Éowyn: Amber weather warning issued for UK amid threat of 90mph winds

Storm Éowyn – pronounced “ay-oh-win” – and the fifth named storm of the season will undergo rapid development during Thursday as it moves across the Atlantic. It will be fuelled by a very powerful jet stream which is fast moving air high in the atmosphere where wind speeds are around 260mph (418km/h). The exact track that Éowyn takes as it approaches the UK and Ireland will determine where the strongest winds will be. It’ll turn windy on Thursday, especially on coasts of west Wales and southern England where there is a yellow Met Office wind warning in force from 07:00 GMT to 18:00. However, this spell of strong winds with gusts of 50-60mph (80-97km/h) is not connected to Storm Éowyn. The strong winds associated with Éoywn will start on Friday morning. Met Office amber severe weather warning covers Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, northern England and North Wales from 06:00 GMT to 21:00 on Friday. Wind gusts of 60-70mph (97-113km/h) fairly widely inland and 80-90mph (129-145km/h) along more exposed coasts and hills. The Met Office suggest that we could even perhaps see even higher gusts in a few locations. Elsewhere, yellow warnings have been issued for most of the UK on Friday and continuing across much of Scotland into Saturday. Across northern and western Scotland, parts of the Midlands and southern England, gusts of 50-65mph (80-105km/h) are expected but around coastal areas gusts up to 80mph (129km/h) are likely. Met Office warnings could still be adjusted and possibly upgraded ahead of Friday. These gales and severe gales are likely to bring travel disruption and some damage, which could include roof tiles being blown off and power cuts. Large waves are also expected with coastal overtopping. Heavy rain is also expected where there is a yellow Met Office rain warning for west Wales and south-west England from midnight to 09:00 GMT Friday. While it will turn milder for some, especially in the south, it will remain cold enough for snow to fall over hills in Scotland and northern England. With potentially 15-25cm (6-10 in) of snow to fall over the highest ground there is a separate yellow warning for snow from 03:00 GMT to 12:00 on Friday. Source link

Apple Intelligence falsely claimed Luke Littler had already won

Imran Rahman-Jones Technology reporter Getty Images Luke Littler does not play in the PDC World Championship final until Friday evening A news summary from Apple falsely claimed darts player Luke Littler had won the PDC World Championship – before he even played in the final. The incorrect summary was written by artificial intelligence (AI) and is based on a BBC story about Littler winning the tournament semi-final on Thursday night. Within hours on Friday, another AI notification summary falsely told some BBC Sport app users that Tennis great Rafael Nadal had come out as gay. Apple, which has been contacted for a response, previously declined to comment on similar examples of false AI alerts about news stories. Apple’s AI software Apple Intelligence launched in the UK in December 2024 with a feature that aims to give users a simple round-up of app alerts they have missed. It collates the alerts into a single message and then uses AI to summarise what they contained. The false alert about Littler was seen by users of the BBC News app earlier in the day. A BBC spokesperson said: “It is essential that Apple fixes this problem urgently – as this has happened multiple times. “As the most trusted news media organisation in the world, it is crucial that audiences can trust any information or journalism published in our name and that includes notifications.” The BBC previously complained to Apple about the Apple Intelligence feature when it generated a false headline about a high-profile alleged murder in the US. Even though this type of summary notification appears to be directly from the BBC, it is in fact Apple Intelligence’s take on much longer headlines. Other stories in the summaries seen on Friday – including those on South Korea and rising cases of influenza – were reported accurately by Apple Intelligence. The latest examples come after journalist body Reporters Without Borders (also known as RSF) called on Apple to axe its AI-powered summaries of news stories last month. “The automated production of false information attributed to a media outlet is a blow to the outlet’s credibility,” Vincent Berthier, the head of RSF’s technology and journalism desk, said in December. He added it was “a danger to the public’s right to reliable information on current affairs.” It is likely that most people’s AI-generated summaries are unique as different combinations of notifications are summarised depending on the device being used and the alerts coming through. BBC Sport app users can follow different sports and receive personalised alerts. Apple Intelligence is only available on certain iPhones – those using the iOS 18.1 system version or later on recent devices (all iPhone 16 phones, the 15 Pro, and the 15 Pro Max). It is also available on some iPads and Macs. The grouped notifications are marked with a specific icon, and users can report any concerns they have on a notification summary. Apple has not outlined how many reports it has received. Source link

Six Nations 2025: Former Wales prop Adam Jones added to Warren Gatland coaching staff

Jones won 100 international caps with 95 games for Wales and five Tests for the British and Irish Lions on two tours. He was awarded the first of his caps in 2003 against England and went on to win four Six Nations titles and compete in three World Cups. Jones toured with the Lions in South Africa in 2009 and proved a cornerstone on the victorious series win in Australia four years later. He starred for Neath and Ospreys, and played a season for Cardiff Blues before joining Harlequins in 2015. After combining coaching and playing duties, Jones announced his retirement in 2018 to take up a full-time coaching role at Quins, where he has helped props like Joe Marler, Kyle Sinckler and Fin Baxter. “Representing your country as a player or a coach is a great honour,” said Harlequins director of rugby Billy Millard. “When we were informed of Adam’s opportunity, we wanted to work collaboratively with him and the Welsh Rugby Union on a solution that catered for all. “We have no doubt he’ll benefit greatly from the exposure of coaching at international level and take learnings from the experience, while continuing to support Danny [Wilson] and the wider coaching staff throughout the Premiership Rugby Cup campaign.” Former Harlequins and Wales centre and current WRU board member Jamie Roberts benefitted from McCann’s work in his playing days. ‘It’s brilliant for the playing group to have someone of Andy’s experience and wisdom to lean on during the upcoming Six Nations campaign,” said Roberts. “Having been around the camp for many years during Warren’s first tenure, I know from experience that Andy’s mental and motivational skillset played a pivotal role in supporting the growth, confidence, and performance of many of the household names of that generation.” Source link

Boy, 12, killed in Birmingham stabbing was ‘adored’

Andrew Dawkins BBC News, West Midlands West Midlands Police His head teacher paid tribute to the “lovely and bright” youngster A 12-year-old boy who was stabbed to death in Birmingham was “adored” by his friends and was “funny and sweet”, his head teacher said. Leo Ross was stabbed in the stomach and found near Scribers Lane in Hall Green at about 15:40 GMT on Tuesday and later died in hospital, West Midlands Police said. He was a pupil at Christ Church C of E Secondary Academy and was a “lively and happy young man” with “many very good friends”, executive head teacher Diane Henson added. A 14-year-old boy was earlier arrested on suspicion of murder. Police said the teenager had also been arrested in connection with an unrelated assault on a woman in her 80s on 19 January. Ms Henson said Leo was “just a lovely and bright member of the school community”. “We’re supporting the children at school and are opening a book of condolence with the family’s permission,” she added. The executive head teacher stated Leo had many good friends “who he absolutely adored and they adored him”. The family said he had been walking a 10-minute route home when the attack happened and described him as “funny, sweet and had not one aggressive bone in his body”. Messages left along with flowers at the scene of the stabbing said Leo was “loved by many people” and “our lives won’t be the same without you” Ch Supt Richard North described the stabbing as “an appalling and senseless attack”. “We are doing everything we can to support the loved ones of the young boy who lost his life in such an appalling way, but we know that nothing we say or do will diminish their agony,” he added. Drone footage shows the scene of the stabbing Scribers Lane is a long and busy road, surrounded by houses, shops and local schools, in the suburb of Hall Green. The attack is believed to have taken place near the railway bridge, which is next to Trittiford Mill Park. Flowers were left at the scene along with written messages which included saying Leo was “loved by many people” and “our lives won’t be the same without you”. Ch Supt North said: “Parents around the country will hear this news and be unable to comprehend the pain they must be feeling. “Our hearts go out to the young boy’s family today.” He urged people and the media not to speculate on the motive for the attack. Ch Supt North added he would urge anyone who saw what happened or who had CCTV, mobile phone or dashcam footage from the area at the time to get in touch as soon as possible. The West Midlands force said their officers would be carrying out patrols locally to try to reassure residents. Knife crime figures released in July showed the West Midlands Police area had the highest rate of offences in England and Wales. West Midlands Police has appealed for information as well as photo and video evidence Source link

England in India: Brendon McCullum’s side thrashed in first T20 of new era

After his transformative impact on the Test side, McCullum’s arrival as white-ball coach has been highly anticipiated, with England hoping he can revitalise a team that has lost its way in giving up two world titles in the last two years. The attacking approach instilled by the New Zealander has drawn criticism at times. This, though, was a result of England’s oldest weakness, rather than any tactical misstep. While left-arm seamer Arshdeep struck twice early on, it was spin that brought their collapse from 65-2 in the eighth over. Only Buttler, who was at his classy rather than inventive best in striking eight fours and two sixes, seemed able to pick Chakravarthy’s mystery. Brook and Livingstone were bowled by his googlies and afterwards the only boundaries were hit by England’s skipper until one by Adil Rashid in the 19th over. Bethell and Atkinson, in particular, chewed up deliveries and were unable to give Buttler the strike. Overton was caught and Atkinson stumped off left-arm spinner Axar, who backed up Chakravarthy with 2-22. The ground fielding and catching was also high-class by a youthful India, without many of their big names from last year’s World Cup win. Mark Wood was run out off the last ball of the innings and England were never going to have enough on a decent pitch. Source link

UFC boss Dana White and two others to join Meta board

Meta has announced the appointment of three new board members including the chief executive of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and close Donald Trump ally, Dana White. It comes as Meta’s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, appears to be making efforts to mend ties with Trump, ahead of the US president-elect’s inauguration this month. Days ago former UK deputy prime minister and Liberal Democrat leader Sir Nick Clegg left his job as president of global affairs at the social media giant. The other new members of Meta’s board include John Elkann, who leads European investment firm Exor, and Charlie Songhurst, a former Microsoft executive. “Dana, John and Charlie will add a depth of expertise and perspective that will help us tackle the massive opportunities ahead with [artificial intelligence], wearables and the future of human connection,” said Mr Zuckerberg in a statement. The social media giant also praised Mr White’s role in turning UFC into a global business. In a post on Meta’s Instagram, Mr White said he loves social media and is “excited to be a small part of the future of [artificial intelligence] and emerging technologies.” Mr White has previously rejected any suggestion that UFC platforms hate speech, insisting he supports free speech. A year ago his tense exchange with a reporter who questioned why he allowed fighters to make anti-LGBT remarks went viral. “People can say whatever they want and they can believe whatever they want,” Mr White retorted. The UFC boss has had a close relationship with Trump for decades. Mr White’s appointment follows news that Sir Nick was being replaced at Meta by his deputy, prominent Republican Joel Kaplan, who has handled relations between the social media firm and the Republican Party. There has been an apparent thawing between Meta and Trump in recent months. Relations had been frosty at least since Trump was barred from Facebook and Instagram following the US Capitol riot in January 2021. In August, Trump wrote in a book that Mr Zuckerberg would “spend the rest of his life in prison” if he attempted to interfere in the 2024 US election. But the president-elect later softened his position, telling a podcast in October it was “nice” that Mr Zuckerberg was “staying out of the election”, and thanking him for a personal phone call after he faced an assassination attempt. Mr Zuckerberg visited Mar-a-Lago and had dinner with Trump after his electoral victory in November. Earlier this month, he donated $1m (£800,000) to the president-elect’s inauguration fund.
