New fast-growing blaze erupts near Los Angeles

A new fast-moving wildfire has erupted in Los Angeles County, triggering evacuations in a region already reeling from the most destructive fires in its history. The Hughes fire ignited north of the city on Wednesday afternoon, near Castaic Lake in a mountainous area that borders several residential areas and schools. The out-of-control blaze has grown to more than 5,000 acres in just two hours fuelled by strong winds. No homes or businesses have been damaged. The new fire is burning north of the two mammoth blazes – which are still burning – that destroyed multiple neighbourhoods in Los Angeles County earlier this month. Two other fires have ignited further south near San Diego and Oceanside, officials said. They are both smaller – 85 acres for the Lilac fire near Oceanside and 3.9 acres for the Bernardo fire – but were burning in populated areas. Fire crews appeared to have a handle on both of the blazes and evacuation orders had been mostly lifted and forward progress stopped. In Los Angeles County, local news showed those near the Hughes fire hosing down their homes and yards with water and others rushing to evacuate neighbourhoods. Orange flames lined the mountains as aircraft dropped water and flame retardant. The region is once again under a red flag warning, which cautions of a high fire risk due to strong winds and dry, low-humid conditions. Winds in the area are blowing around 20 to 30 mph but are forecast to strengthen throughout the day, which could allow the blaze to grow and make it harder for air crews to continue their battle from above. Ed Fletcher, who works for Cal Fire – California’s statewide fire agency, told the BBC that this fire was different than those earlier this month. The winds are not as strong yet, he said, and there are a lot of crews trying to tame the flames. “It’s super dry and we know it will be increasingly windy later,” he said. “We’ll know more in a few hours.” Mr Fletcher noted the area is not highly populated and current winds are blowing the fire toward Castaic Lake, which is acting as a buffer between the Castaic area, which is home to about 20,000 residents. “If it jumps the lake,” he said, “it becomes a much more dynamic situation.” One woman who evacuated her home told NBC 4 that she was stuck on Interstate 5, California’s primary transportation highway that runs through the state. Parts of the interstate in the area had been closed due to the fire. “It looked like a cloud, but as you got close, it looked like we were driving into hell,” she said of the dark smoke and red flames she saw. “It was pretty terrifying to be honest with you.” She acknowledged being on edge after watching the Palisades and Eaton fires burn nearby, killing at least 28 people and decimating more than 10,000 homes and businesses. “I don’t know why they keep popping up,” she said. “It’s definitely a scary time in this area.” Source link

30 years ago Tomorrow’s World predicted 2025

Graham Fraser Technology reporter BBC This fictional 2025 couple, along with the man’s ‘VR headset’, featured in the Tomorrow’s World episode in 1995. In 1995, the BBC’s Tomorrow’s World programme decided to predict what the world would look like 30 years later, in 2025. The show, which is no longer broadcast, featured one of the most famous scientists of the age, Prof Stephen Hawking, who predicted: “By 2025 we can expect big changes.” The programme team agreed, suggesting a raft of world-shaking innovations from hologram surgery to space junk gel. So, with the help of some experts – and the benefit of three decades of hindsight – let’s take a look at how much of today’s world that Tomorrow’s World successfully anticipated. The ‘Cyberspace Riots’ of 2005 The programme predicted there would be riots after financial markets “succumb to viral terrorism”. In 1995, the world wide web was really taking off – a development Tomorrow’s World thought would bring future trouble. They predicted “business barons” and banks would take control of the internet by 2000, establishing a “supernet” which they restricted access to. That, in turn, would prompt hacks, viruses and even riots. Tomorrow’s World in 1995 predicted riots would happen after the creation of the “supernet” Verdict – The internet has remained – mostly – open, and there have been no riots but there is little doubt the actions of hackers have caused misery for many people. One thing the programme didn’t predict was the role of the nation state hackers like North Korea, expertly told in the BBC’s Lazarus Heist podcast. Cybersecurity is hugely important for governments and companies, and people who are suspicious of banks have championed cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Asteroid mining and space junk gel Tomorrow’s World predicted the rise of asteroid mining, and the death of an astronaut from space junk The programme speculated space mining would become a lucrative industry, with companies excavating asteroids near Earth for precious metals. The show also suggested space junk would become such a problem it would not be safe for astronauts. The answer – a gigantic foam gel to slow down debris. Verdict – Well, there is no super foam gel and the problem of space junk is an acute one. There is also no space mining industry – but that could change. Futurist Tom Cheesewright is an optimist about mining beyond our planet. “The potential riches are unfathomable and the technology is entirely within our grasp,” he said. The super surgeons and their robots Tomorrow’s World thought patients would be operated on by robots that were remotely operated by a surgeon from a far-off location Tomorrow’s World predicted by 2004, a law would be passed for all UK hospitals to publish a league table of surgeon success rates. The top surgeons would become so popular, and so well paid, it would make no sense for them to travel to patients. Instead, patient holograms would be sent to them and the surgeon would operate using “spacial gloves”. At the patient’s end, a robot would perfectly mimic the movements of the surgeon. Verdict – They didn’t get it exactly right but robots are helping with surgeries. A smart speaker with a floating head Alexa? Siri? Google? Not quite. The programme featured a man of the future (wearing a fetching VR headset), his wife and a young girl in what appears to be modern-day London. In one section, the floating head of a woman comes out of a “smart speaker” to tell the man it has been a year since his holiday to “Indo Disney.” She encourages him to take another holiday via a “shuttle to Bangalore” – which would only take 40 minutes. Verdict – Ultra-fast travel feels as far away as ever, but holograms, smart speakers and VR headsets are becoming ever more prevalent. Banking using a microchip in your arm How do you feel about withdrawing some money using a chip implanted in your arm? Elsewhere in the programme, we were given a vision of the future of banking. It featured a woman going to a bank, complaining there were no humans, and then withdrawing 100 “Euro marks.” The bank gives her the money after scanning a chip in her arm. Verdict – Banking has indeed become more and more automated. And though paying via microchips inside the human body is a reality, other technologies – mainly fingerprint and face scanning – are much more widely used. In 1995, Tomorrow’s World offered a vision of self-driving cars and the failure of electric vehicles by 2025 Memories from the presenters Getty Images Monty Don is a familiar face to many who enjoy gardening programmes Gardeners’ World star Monty Don was one of the presenters on that Tomorrow’s World programme 30 years ago. His segment predicted a huge restoration of British woodlands thanks to genetic engineering and multi-storey agri facilities, leading to the return of animals including the brown bear. Reflecting on it now, he told BBC News that his part of the programme was “utopian” and “naive”. Looking towards the next 30 years, he is pleased the current generation of young people are “much more sensitive to climate change” and thinks people will be growing more of their own food by 2055. He added: “Tomorrow’s World was by definition geared towards the way that mankind could change and improve the world, whereas what we have really learnt since then is that mankind has a habit of making things worse, particularly environmentally, and we have to work with nature rather than try modify and control it.” Monty Don talking about the reintroduction of brown bears in the 1995 programme. Vivienne Parry was another presenter on the prediction show, and fronted a section about medicine. She fondly remembers filming it – and the rather limited visual effects of the day. “I had to stay absolutely still. I had a set of glasses on with a little camera attached. They were stuck on my face via a big blob of

Tottenham: Ange Postecoglou says players are ‘giving everything’

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou says his players are “giving everything in every game” and have a “fantastic opportunity” to enjoy a successful season. Spurs have won just one of their past 10 Premier League games and are without a victory in the past six. Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Everton was their third in succession and they sit 15th in the table, leading to questions over whether Postecoglou is the right man to take the club forward. Despite their league struggles Tottenham remain active in three other competitions – the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Europa League. “We are still in three cup competitions and there’s a fantastic opportunity for us there in the next couple of months,” Postecoglou said. “The players are giving everything in every game. The players aren’t prioritising anything – they are trying their utmost.” Tottenham have lost 12 games in the Premier League this season, making it only the sixth campaign in which they have lost as many as 12 from their first 22 league matches, and the first time since 1997-98 (also 12 defeats). Spurs’ best chance of winning silverware could lie in the EFL Cup after winning the first leg of their semi-final 1-0 when hosting Liverpool. They travel to Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup and are ninth in the Europa League standings – one place outside automatic qualification for the last 16, but they have two games to play. Postecoglou believes injuries have played a major part in Tottenham’s struggles and he has only 13 fit senior players available for Thursday’s Europa League trip to Hoffenheim (17:45 GMT). “You really need a really strong squad of players to compete in Europe and do well in cup competitions because it’s not manageable when you play three games a week,” Postecoglou added. “The reality is we don’t have a lot of choice [because of injuries]. You’re always assessing why it’s happening. “Early part of the year there were some things that were repeatedly happening with injuries so we’ve worked hard to better that process. Recently it’s accumulation and toll of fixtures.” Source link

Eleven die in India as passengers fleeing fire fears hit by another train

At least 11 people have been killed and five injured after they fled rumours of a fire on board their train in India, only to be hit by another train. Railway officials said the passengers got down from the Mumbai-bound train in western Maharashtra state after someone pulled the emergency cord, causing it to stop. They were hit by a train on an adjacent track. It was not immediately clear whether there had actually been a fire. India has launched a $30bn (£24bn) programme to modernise its railways in recent years but this has been marred by a series of accidents, including a major three-train crash in 2023 in the state of Odisha which left nearly 300 people dead. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in a post on X that he was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives” during the incident near Pachora in Jalgaon district, about 400km from Mumbai, India’s financial capital. He said eight ambulances had been dispatched and hospitals were on standby. The crash will be seen as a setback for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has called for modernisation of the railways to boost the economy and connectivity. There are plans to boost spending on the programme in next month’s budget, Reuters news agency reports. Source link

Trump tells Putin to end ‘ridiculous war’ in Ukraine or face new sanctions

US President Donald Trump has warned he will impose high tariffs on Russian goods and impose further sanctions if it fails to end the war in Ukraine. Writing on his social media platform Truth Social, he said that by pushing to settle the war he was doing Russia, and its President Vladimir Putin, a “very big favour”. Trump has previously said he would negotiate a settlement to the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, in a single day. Russia has not yet responded to the remarks, but senior officials have said in recent days that there is a small window of opportunity for Moscow to deal with the new US administration. Putin has said repeatedly that he is prepared to negotiate an end to the war, but that Ukraine would have to accept the reality of Russian territorial gains, which are currently about 20% of its land. Kyiv meanwhile says it is not prepared to give up its territory. On Tuesday Trump told a news conference he would be talking to Putin “very soon” and it “sounds likely” that he would apply more sanctions if the Russian leader did not come to the table. But in his Truth Social post on Wednesday, he went further: “I’m going to do Russia, whose Economy is failing, and President Putin, a very big FAVOR,” he wrote. “Settle now, and STOP this ridiculous War! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE. If we don’t make a ‘deal’, and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries.” Continuing, he said: “Let’s get this war, which never would have started if I were President, over with! We can do it the easy way, or the hard way – and the easy way is always better. It’s time to “MAKE A DEAL”.” Russia’s deputy UN ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy earlier told Reuters news agency that the Kremlin would need to know what Trump wants in a deal to stop the war before the country moves forward. Meanwhile Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the World Economic Forum on Tuesday that at least 200,000 peacekeepers would be needed under any agreement. And he told Bloomberg that any peacekeeping force for his country would have to include US troops to pose a realistic deterrent to Russia. “It can’t be without the United States… Even if some European friends think it can be, no it will not be,” he said, adding that no-one else would risk such a move without the US. While Ukraine’s leaders might appreciate this tougher-talking Trump – they have always said Putin only understands strength – the initial reaction in Kyiv to the US president’s comments suggest that it is actions people are waiting for, not words. Trump has not specified where more economic penalties might be aimed, or when. Russian imports to the US have plummeted since 2022 and there are all sorts of heavy restrictions already in place. Currently, the main Russian exports to the US are phosphate-based fertilisers and platinum. On social media, there was a generally scathing response from Ukrainians. Many suggested that more sanctions were a weak reply to Russian aggression. But the biggest question for most is what Putin is actually open to discussing with Ukraine at any peace talks. In Moscow meanwhile, some people are seeing signs that the Kremlin may be readying Russians to accept less than the “victory” once envisaged, which included tanks rolling all the way west to the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa. TV editor Margarita Simonyan, who is stridently pro-Putin, has begun talking of “realistic” conditions for ending the war, which she suggests could include halting the fighting along the current frontline. That would mean the four Ukrainian regions that Putin illegally pronounced as Russian territory more than two years ago, like Zaporizhzhia, still being partially controlled by Kyiv. Russian hardliners, the so-called “Z” bloggers, are furious at such “defeatism”. In his social media post, Trump also couched his threat of tariffs and tighter sanctions in words of “love” for the Russian people and highlighted his respect for Soviet losses in World War Two – a near-sacred topic for Putin – though Trump massively overestimated the numbers and appeared to think the USSR was Russia alone. In reality, millions of Ukrainians and other Soviet citizens also lost their lives. That said, the man who previously said he could “understand” Russia’s concerns about Ukraine joining Nato – which for Kyiv is tantamount to saying Putin was provoked – does seem to be shifting his tone. Trump’s position matters. But after 11 years of war with Russia and a history of poor peace deals, Ukrainians are not inclined to be hopeful. Source link

Court strikes down US net neutrality rules

Getty Images A US court has rejected the Biden administration’s bid to restore “net neutrality” rules, finding that the federal government does not have the authority to regulate internet providers like utilities. It marks a major defeat for so-called open internet advocates, who have long fought for protections that would require internet providers such as AT&T to treat all legal content equally. Such rules were first introduced by the Federal Communications Commission under former Democratic president Barack Obama but later repealed during Republican Donald Trump’s first term. The decision, just as Trump is poised to enter the White House for a second term, likely puts an end to the long-running legal battle over the issue. In their decision, the judges noted that different administrations have gone back and forth on the issue. But they said the court no longer had to give “deference” to the FCC’s reading of the law, pointing to a recent Supreme Court decision that limits the authority of federal agencies to interpret laws, a decision that critics expect will be used to weaken regulation in the years ahead. “Applying Loper Bright, means we can end the FCC’s vacillations,” the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals said. Brendan Carr, a Republican member of the FCC who Trump has tapped to lead the agency, said he was pleased the court had invalidated the Biden administration’s “Internet power grab”. The FCC’s outgoing Democratic commissioner said the ruling turned the issue over to Congress. “Consumers across the country have told us again and again that they want an internet that is fast, open, and fair,” Jessica Rosenworcel said. “With this decision it is clear that Congress now needs to heed their call, take up the charge for net neutrality, and put open internet principles in federal law.” The fight over net neutrality was once a heated issue in the US, pitting internet providers against big tech companies such as Google and Netflix. Comedian John Oliver famously urged his audience to express support for the rules, leading to a deluge of comments that crashed the government’s site. But the issue has faded in prominence since the rules were repealed in 2018. Thursday’s ruling does not affect state-level net neutrality laws, which in some places offer similar protections. But advocates, like Mr Oliver, have said that national rules are important to preventing internet providers from having powers to throttle certain content or charge more for speedy delivery of their service. Public Knowledge, a progressive-leaning internet policy group, said the decision had weakened the FCC’s power to shape privacy protections, implement public safety measures and take other action. It said it believed the court had erred in ruling that internet service providers were simply offering an “information service” rather than acting as telecommunications companies. “The court has created a dangerous regulatory gap that leaves consumers vulnerable and gives broadband providers unchecked power over Americans’ internet access,” it said. But USTelecom, an industry group whose members include AT&T and Verizon, said the decision was “a victory for American consumers that will lead to more investment, innovation, and competition in the dynamic digital marketplace.” Source link
