Usman Nurmagomedov: MMA star Paul Hughes says 2025 will be his “superstardom” year’

Hughes accepts that he is the underdog going into this fight, a role he thrives on given his own self-belief. “People were doubting me [against McKee] and they had reason to doubt. You compare my record to his, I really shouldn’t have beaten him,” he added “There was no reason to go take such a big step so early in my career, but there were zero doubts in my mind, and it is the same with Usman. “I am the best in the world 155lb MMA fighter, and I’m prepared for absolutely everything.” Usman Nurmagomedov was given a six-month suspension from MMA in 2023 after testing positive for a banned substance, but Hughes insists that it is “not something I’m thinking about”. The Bellator lightweight champion denied taking steroids, saying at the time that it was “medication”. Details of Nurmagomedov’s failed test were never released publicly, and he was not stripped of the organisation’s title. “It will take more than steroids to beat me, especially over five rounds,” he said. “That is where you get tested and that is where I will take him to the depths of hell.” Hughes is bidding to become a two-time champion, having previously held the Cage Warriors featherweight title in 2022. “I don’t know what will be more important, getting the belt or beating Usman. I haven’t thought that far ahead yet, I’ve been focused on the task at hand.” He has, however, made a clear prediction for how the fight is going to pan out. “I’m expecting me to clip him early and for him to shoot for takedowns as if his life depended on it. “That is exactly what is going to happen and I’m going to use that to his demise. Knockout second round.” Source link

Ricky Gervais tribute after Herefordshire-born dog from After Life dies

Netflix Ricky Gervais said he and Anti “hit it off straight away” Ricky Gervais has paid tribute to his After Life character’s dog following the animal’s death at the age of 13. Vislor Antilly, a German shepherd known as Anti, played Brandy through three seasons of the Netflix comedy about a local newspaper reporter dealing with the death of his wife. Antilly was born in Herefordshire, at the home of West Bromwich-based Vislor Dog Training Centre, and was also in Tom Cruise’s film Edge Of Tomorrow and appeared alongside George Clooney in The Midnight Sky. Gervais said “Anti was a beautiful soul” and she had helped make After Life “my favourite filming experience of all time”. Antilly passed away at her home in Oxfordshire and the comedian, actor and writer said it was “such sad news”. He added they had “hit it off straight away” and stated: “I’m so glad that I told her a hundred times a day that she was a very good girl.” Gervais, as Tony, is often seen in the show walking Brandy, who stops him from taking his own life. The comedy began in 2019 and also starred David Bradley, Ashley Jensen, Tom Basden, Tony Way, Kerry Godliman, Roisin Conaty and Diane Morgan, before finishing with a third season in 2022. Beth Heale Antilly helped fundraise for the Florence Nightingale Hospice Antilly was raised by trainers Travis and Ashley Foster, who appeared as a henchman in Sir Christopher Nolan’s Batman: The Dark Knight. She visited them on set at 10 weeks old and later went on to be in films including the Michael Fassbender-starring Trespass Against Us. Clooney went on to cast Antilly in the 2023 film he directed, The Boys In The Boat, and the dog also appeared in the BBC’s The Capture, ITV’s Doc Martin as well as Britain’s Got More Talent and Channel 4’s 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown. Her final stunt on camera was released in July 2024 in the Midsomer Murders’ episode The Debt Of Lies, where she played a retired police dog who detains the murderer before retiring. Antilly retired from film and TV after that. A statement said: “Vislor Antilly, known to most people worldwide as Brandy, Ricky Gervais’ loyal sidekick in the Netflix smash hit After Life, has passed away peacefully at her home in Oxfordshire at the age of 13.” Source link

Bloc may consider UK joining pan-Europe customs scheme

The new European Union trade chief responsible for post-Brexit negotiations has told the BBC that a “pan-European [customs] area is something we could consider” as part of “reset” discussions between the UK and EU. Maros Sefcovic was referring to the idea, backed by some UK business groups, of Britain joining the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean Convention (PEM). The PEM allows manufacturers to use parts or ingredients from dozens of countries, from Iceland to Turkey, in tariff-free trade. The previous Conservative government chose not to pursue PEM as part of its post-Brexit trade deal, but some businesses say it will help Britain rejoin complex supply chains that have been hit by customs barriers. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr Sefcovic said the idea has not been “precisely formulated” by London yet and the “ball is in the UK’s court”. The BBC understands that the UK government has begun consultations with business over the benefits of the PEM plan that could help cut red tape and improve trade. No final decision has been made yet. Mr Sefcovic also said that a full-scale veterinary agreement that helped reduce frictions on farm and food trade should also be reviewed. Single market treatment for UK food and farm exports would mean “we would have to have the same rules and we have to upgrade them at the same time, we call it dynamic alignment”, he told me. The EU-UK fisheries deal is also due to expire next year. “A solution for fisheries is very important for the EU, again, we communicated this on multiple occasions,” Mr Sefcovic said. Mr Sefcovic also said he was surprised that the European Commission’s offer on youth exchanges had been “spun”. “It’s not freedom of movement. It’s a bridge-building proposal. “We do not want to look like the demanders here, because we believe this is good for the UK,” he said The trade commissioner said UK-EU relations were “definitely” in a better place and his British counterpart Nick Thomas-Symonds was “on speed dial”. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will attend a defence and security focused EU summit next month. As well as relations with the UK, Mr Sefcovic acknowledged that the EU needed to be “extremely cautious and responsible” in addressing trade with the Trump administration in Washington but said he was willing to negotiate. He added that while the EU did have a surplus in goods such as cars, the US had a surplus in services Source link

The obstacles facing indie developers

Tom Richardson BBC Newsbeat Adam Riches Adam Riches has spent the past three-and-a-half years making a game with his brother “Everything is on fire at the moment,” says indie developer Adam Riches. It’s not a controversial view, and when Adam says it he’s almost casual. Just a fact of life these days. Widespread lay-offs and studio closures that rocked the industry last year have continued into 2024, and the rush of investment off the back of the Covid pandemic gaming boom has slowed down. There’s also evidence people have been spending less money on new games, choosing to stick with long-running online games like Fortnite or yearly franchises including Call of Duty and EA Sports FC. Despite that, more games than ever are getting released. The UK’s Digital Entertainment and Retail Association said in July that game sales had dropped sharply when compared with the same period last year. That’s not only affected premium releases – smaller studios, whose games tend to be more affordable, have also struggled to find an audience. It’s often difficult to pinpoint why, but quality isn’t a guarantee of success. “You can have the best marketing, you can have the best game, you can get rave reviews, but you’re still flipping a coin as to whether it’s going to blow up,” Adam says. He feels “discoverability” – getting players to actually find your game – is one of the biggest challenges for indie developers. Steam, the main marketplace for PC gamers run by developer Valve, sells everything from games made in someone’s bedroom to big-budget blockbusters made by teams of hundreds. There’s a lot of competition. According to tracker SteamDB, more than 14,000 games have been published on the platform this year, with 2024 already overtaking 2023’s tally. Adam’s just added another to the total. He’s released murder mystery adventure Loco Motive – a game he’s been making with his brother for the last three years. He jokes that the best time to have put the game out was 2013 – when Steam wasn’t quite so crowded. There are still ways to stand out – the platform recommends games based on users’ playing habits and regularly runs promotions which push a curated selection of games on to homepages. But Adam admits it’s tough. “We’re all competing for those same slots, and now we’re competing with triple-A and other indies,” says Adam. Robust Games Adam’s game Loco Motive takes inspiration from point n’ click adventure games made popular in the 1990s As well as battling for player’s attention, new games are increasingly battling for their time. According to analytics firm Newzoo, annual series such as Call of Duty and online titles such as Fortnite took up 92% of gaming time, with just 8% remaining for new releases. Drawing players away from those established titles is extremely difficult. The failure of Sony’s online shooter Concord – which the PlayStation maker killed just two weeks after release – has been put down to its similarity to popular titles already on the market. Rhys Elliott, an analyst from Midia Research, suggests the big success stories of 2024 – Balatro, multiplayer shooter Helldivers II and “Pokémon with guns” Palworld – did something new and interesting. But he accepts that’s not the only ingredient. “Factors like a strong IP, strong marketing campaign, community fostering, and timing can help, but the fact is that there is luck involved,” he says. “Right place, right time is a big part of gaming’s surprise successes. “But gameplay matters, and innovation, so great games often stand out and find their market.” Husban Siddiqi Husban Siddiqi managed to secure funding from the makers of Among Us for his game Rogue Eclipse Another big issue for developers this year is finding funding. Investment in new projects has slowed down, leading some studios behind previous indie hits to step in and fill the gap. Among Us publisher Innersloth, for example, recently launched Outersloth – a fund to give developers a helping hand with getting their projects over the line. Husban Siddiqi was among the first group selected by the programme for his upcoming game Rogue Eclipse. He says Innersloth “understand the struggles” developers go through, and their support has been invaluable. But, even with the backing of an established studio, Husban isn’t taking success for granted. “It’s unforgiving, the speed at which things change, the technology changes, the platforms change,” he says. “I always feel like we’re trying to study as quickly as possible before some paradigm shift happens that kind of upends whatever that conventional thinking was.” Snow Rui Snow Rui is one of the founders of Hooded Horse – a publisher that specialises in strategy games Manor Lords – a strategy game that puts players in charge of building a Medieval settlement. It’s sold 2.5 million copies since its early access release in April. Snow Rui, co-founder of publisher Hooded Horse, puts the game’s success down to the spin it puts on the genre by allowing players to inhabit and walk around the settlements they create. Manor Lords generated huge pre-release interest based on early trailers, but Snow admits that Hooded Horse was still surprised by its reception. “It would almost be arrogant not to be taken aback by how successful it turned out to be,” she says. Snow says one the best pieces of advice she got was “don’t roll too fast” once you’ve found success. Some of the wider industry’s problems have been blamed on companies expanding too quickly when gaming profits ballooned during the pandemic. Snow says it’s more important to her to be sustainable over the long-term, and be realistic with your expectations. “A breakout hit like this, you cannot count on it to repeat itself year after year,” she says. “There will be people pushing you to have a different expectation or treating the next year as a failure if the breakout hit doesn’t repeat itself but that’s simply not the case. “So that’s a matter of setting your expectations and

Prosiect Cymru: Why are the English FA voting on plans to change Welsh football?

Being blunt, it is about money. The FAW says the new cup – which would replace the existing Welsh League Cup – would generate £3m a season, with the aim to invest that into grassroots infrastructure projects, women’s football and the domestic game in general. But there is also the longer-term hope that the EFL clubs would perform better in Europe than Cymru Premier clubs have managed in recent years – with the notable exception of The New Saints this season. Better results improves the coefficient – the country’s ranking – which helps earn more money from Uefa for the association to hand out. For the EFL clubs, there is the chance to play in Europe – and the financial and commercial benefits that come from it. Source link

A23a: Giant iceberg on collision course with island

Georgina Rannard Climate and science reporter Erwan Rivault Data journalist Getty Images The world’s largest iceberg is on a collision course with a remote British island, potentially putting penguins and seals in danger. The iceberg is spinning northwards from Antarctica towards South Georgia, a rugged British territory and wildlife haven, where it could ground and smash into pieces. It is currently 173 miles (280km) away. Countless birds and seals died on South Georgia’s icy coves and beaches when past giant icebergs stopped them feeding. “Icebergs are inherently dangerous. I would be extraordinarily happy if it just completely missed us,” sea captain Simon Wallace tells BBC News, speaking from the South Georgia government vessel Pharos. BFSAI The RAF recently flew over the vast iceberg as it neared South Georgia Around the world a group of scientists, sailors and fishermen are anxiously checking satellite pictures to monitor the daily movements of this queen of icebergs. It is known as A23a and is one of the world’s oldest. It calved, or broke off, from the Filchner Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 1986 but got stuck on the seafloor and then trapped in an ocean vortex. Finally, in December, it broke free and is now on its final journey, speeding into oblivion. The warmer waters north of Antarctica are melting and weakening its vast cliffs that tower up to 1,312ft (400m), taller than the Shard in London. It once measured 3,900 sq km, but the latest satellite pictures show it is slowly decaying. It is now around 3,500 sq km, roughly the size of the English county of Cornwall. And large slabs of ice are breaking off, plunging into the waters around its edges. A23a could break into vast segments any day, which may then hang around for years, like floating cities of ice cruising uncontrollably around South Georgia. This isn’t the first huge iceberg to threaten South Georgia and Sandwich Islands. In 2004 one called A38 grounded on its continental shelf, leaving dead penguin chicks and seal pups on beaches as massive ice chunks blocked their access to feeding grounds. The territory is home to precious colonies of King Emperor penguins and millions of elephant and fur seals. “South Georgia sits in iceberg alley so impacts are to be expected for both fisheries and wildlife, and both have a great capacity to adapt,” says Mark Belchier, a marine ecologist who advises the South Georgia government. Watch conditions at sea for sailors dodging icebergs in South Georgia Sailors and fisherman say icebergs are an increasing problem. In 2023 one called A76 gave them a scare when it came close to grounding. “Chunks of it were tipping up, so they looked like great ice towers, an ice city on the horizon,” says Mr Belchier, who saw the iceberg while at sea. Those slabs are still lingering around the islands today. “It is in bits from the size of several Wembley stadiums down to pieces the size of your desk,” says Andrew Newman from Argos Froyanes, a fishing company that works in South Georgia. “Those pieces basically cover the island – we have to work our way through it,” says Captain Wallace. The sailors on his ship must be constantly vigilant. “We have searchlights on all night to try to see ice – it can come from nowhere,” he explains. A76 was a “gamechanger”, according to Mr Newman, with “huge impact on our operations and on keeping our vessel and crew safe”. Simon Wallace Ice is a way of life but Simon Wallace says an experienced sailor knows to avoid icebergs All three men describe a rapidly changing environment, with glacial retreat visible year-to-year, and volatile levels of sea ice. Climate change is unlikely to have been behind the birth of A23a because it calved so long ago, before much of the impacts of rising temperatures that we are now seeing. But giant icebergs are part of our future. As Antarctica becomes more unstable with warmer ocean and air temperatures, more vast pieces of the ice sheets will break away. Before its time comes to an end though, A23a has left a parting gift for scientists. A team with the British Antarctic Survey on the Sir David Attenborough research vessel found themselves close to A23a in 2023. The scientists scrambled to exploit the rare opportunity to investigate what mega icebergs do to the environment. Tony Jolliffe/BBC Samples that Laura Taylor took from A23a help her research how icebergs affect the carbon cycle The ship sailed into a crack in the iceberg’s gigantic walls, and PhD researcher Laura Taylor collected precious water samples 400m away from its cliffs. “I saw a massive wall of ice way higher than me, as far as I could see. It has different colours in different places. Chunks were falling off – it was quite magnificent,” she explains from her lab in Cambridge where she is now analysing the samples. Her work looks at what the impact the melt water is having on the carbon cycle in the southern ocean. Getty Images “This isn’t just water like we drink. It’s full of nutrients and chemicals, as well as tiny animals like phytoplankton frozen inside,” Ms Taylor says. As it melts, the iceberg releases those elements into the water, changing the physics and chemistry of the ocean. That could store more carbon deep in the ocean, as the particles sink from the surface. That would naturally lock away some of the planet’s carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to climate change. Icebergs are notoriously unpredictable and no-one knows what exactly it will do next. But soon the behemoth should appear, looming on the islands’ horizons, as big as the territory itself. Source link
